Karakia and Prayer in Te Reo Māori Course

July 23 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

7pm-9pm, four weeks from 23 July 2024 at Tui Room, St Barnabas Centre, 8 Tui St, Fendalton.

Join our four-week course where we’ll explore the rich world of karakia (prayers) and pūrakau (legends) in Te Ao Māori (the Māori world). We will also learn how to express ourselves in Te Reo Māori in Christian prayer (inoi).

Course Highlights:

  • Traditional Karakia: Immerse yourself in the chants that honour the land, the ancestors, and the divine. Each week, we’ll examine a karakia and understand its significance in responding to God’s revelation in nature.
  • Traditional Pūrakau: Learn about the atua (gods/guardians) and their significance in pūrakau or legends. What lessons can we learn from pūrakau for the modern world?
  • Christian Inoi: Discover how to pray Christian prayers in Te Reo Māori. We’ll cover essential phrases and expressions, explore the Bible for inspiration and enable you to create your own prayers.
  • Pronunciation: Learn how to pronounce your prayers accurately.
  • Create Your Own Prayer: By the end of the course, you will have composed a simple, personal prayer in Te Reo Māori.
