For the last two years one of the most important enquiries into abuse within the State and Church Care Institutions has been completed. This report has immense implications for the wider community, as it seeks to bring justice for the vulnerable, and ensure our care facilities are safe in the future.

As an advocate and one of the instigators of the report, Ken Clearwater will help us understand what this means today. Ken is a leader in caring for those abused in care, providing a unique and down to earth perspective on this critical report.

We invite you and your whanau to join us to hear Ken ONZM (Officer New Zealand Order of Merit) talk about his work with and support of male survivors of sexual trauma since 1994 in a peer support model.

In 1998 a survivor disclosed the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of brothers at the St John of God Order Maryland’s School Halswell. He went public in 2002 and a Police inquiry was held which resulted in two brothers being prosecuted.

This work took Ken to many places, presenting workshops and Keynotes at Conferences, Minneapolis, New York, Phoenix Arizona, Canada, Switzerland, Uganda, Cambodia, Norway, Ireland, Wales, England and throughout Australia.

He attended the first Conference on sexual abuse against males by the Catholic Church in Ireland, 2006.

In 2013 he was invited to speak at the first workshop for male victims of sexual abuse in conflict and displacement held by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York.

He was one of the Commissioners on the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care.

He is a father of two daughters and has five grandchildren.
